Architect in the Process

Theories of Architecture
The Community Service Initiative is a module which discusses theoretical issues related to the studies of architecture. Students are given literature reviews from professionals in their respective field to read and then reflect upon. By doing this, students are exposed to the different opinions regarding architecture. The vital part of theories is learning the 5 elements of the city which will bolster our future studies.

Our first project comprises of 2 parts where we must conduct a site study and identify the 5 elements from our allocated site.

Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project are as follow:
1. To provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case-studies and theoretical studies
2. To enhance the understanding of the complexity of architecture and the ability to undertake independent research
Learning Outcomes of this Project
1. Analyse architecture and urban forms in relation to relevant architectural theories
2. Analyse and critique the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural and intellectual context
3. Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary discourse of architecture

Project B - Illustrated Essay with Cognitive Mapping
The next project had us draw out a cognitive of significant urban spaces in the site to show our understanding of the city. WIth the aid of the cognitive map, we were to do an illustrated essay in relation to Kevin Lynch's Image of The City.
Every 2 weeks, we were given reading materials to read from so we can write up a synopsis on how much we learnt from it. We then orally present our findings to our tutors to understand the reading material with more depth. The given reading materials were really interesting and posed some critical questions regarding the future of architecture and also given us much knowledge.
